How many business cards do you have lying in the pockets of your computer bag after events? How many times have you vowed you'd input that contact information in your phone or iPad or whatever "contact management system" you use? Check out the SocialTagg app and never worry about losing those important contacts again.
The SocialTagg app, which launched in both the AppStore and Google play this week, is an easy way to share contact information with people you've just met. It allows you to leave those business cards at home while still networking at trade shows, conferences, and other events. We asked the team at SocialTagg about the app and their experience building it.
Can you tell us a bit about you — what you do, who are your users and clients, your vision for the project?
SocialTagg is building a software platform that better connects people at events. Our applications provide easy ways for event attendees to exchange information and event organizers to manage their guests. Our vision is to be the de facto event networking software on the market.
What does your app do? Who is it for and why is it unique?
The MVP version of our app, which we just released to the market place, is essentially a business card replacement. We make the business card obsolete by assigning each one of our users their very own, unique QR code. Instead of exchanging business cards, you simply scan a potential contact's QR code and information is instantly exchanged. Since we keep all of our data in the Apigee App Services cloud, all of your contact information is always up to date.
There are other contact sharing apps out there. We feel our platform is unique because there's low traction to get started. Unlike some other platforms where both parties need to have the app in order to exchange information, with SocialTagg, only one party needs to have the app. If I have the app and you don't, you can simply scan my QR code with the QR code reader built into your phone and you'll be taken to our website where you can view my profile.
What were some of the development challenges you typically faced and how did you overcome?
The biggest challenges we faced were centered around syncing data with social networks and also making sure data was consistent across all three of our platforms (web, Android, and iOS).
We chose Apigee because they gave us everything we need right out-of-the-box to create a completely customized, performant, and powerful backend. Using App Services, we were able to focus on making the client side experience for our platform more awesome. The price is also fabulous.
We are only at the beginning with SocialTagg. The next phase is to build an event check-in platform. The event check-in platform allows attendees to check-in to events and immediately see and exchange information with everyone else who has checked-in. The check-in platform also creates tremendous value for event organizers as it will give them a wealth of data about their attendees and provide a real-time way to measure the attendance of their event.
